Where it grows

Between the Ravi and the Chenab

Pakistan's basmati comes from the Kalar tract — the alluvial plain of Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Hafizabad and Sheikhupura, watered by rivers fed by Himalayan snowmelt.

That soil and water are what give basmati its length and aroma. Basmati grown in Pakistan is a registered geographical indication, and we only call a rice basmati when it is.
